However, proving our doubts wrong, the Judiciary passed his suspension order as a punishment for his deed. We express our deep and heartfelt thanks to the Judiciary and all those who stood by us. : A visibly jubilant Commissioner of Police S P Yadav who rejoined his duties after a medical leave, while addressing a press conference said that inspite of major events and festivities which include the hanging of Mumbai Serial Blast convict Yakub Memon, Dahi Handi, Pola, Marbat, Ramzan, Ganesh Utsav, Bakri-Eid, Navratra and Garba-Dandiya events, Muharram, Dhammachakra Pravartan Din at Deekshabhumi, Vijayadashmi celebrations at RSS HQ in Reshimbagh and Dussehra, no untoward incident was reported in the city. He lauded the cooperation of the media personnel and the citizens for maintaining peace and harmony.

The Commissioner of Police acquiesced to the fact that there were many stray incidents of serious crime including murders and chain-snatching. However, he claimed with pride that apart from the Crime-Branch, Detection Branch (DB Squad) of individual police stations too have become active and have succeeded in cracking many crimes.

While elaborating this he said that the DB Squad of Panchpaoli Police Station succeeded in recovering goods and property worth Rupees Twenty Lakhs. They have succeeded in arresting eight accused involved in the crime too.

He also claimed that the crime branch has succeeded in nabbing five Bangladeshi Nationals staying in city illegally.

Crime rate declines by 50%
Commissioner of Police S P Yadav with great pride said that the murder rate is reduced to 50% in the city and incidents like chain-snatching have been reduced to 60% in the city. He added that in view of increasing incidents of chain-snatching, a concerted preventive drive was undertaken by Crime Branch and the goons on record were identified and using the modus-operandi techniques of those goons, the incidents of chain-snatching were reduced, This year, 69 incidents less than previous year were reported.

Women’s safety
In view of the increasing incidents of crime against women, the Commissioner of Police S P Yadav and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime & Cyber Cell) Deepali Masirkar said that there is an urgent need for a public awareness which can encourage women to come forward and register cases against the accused. The CP further said that he has instructed the police stations to observe a zero-tolerance policy towards registering of cases especially lodged by women folk. He also claimed that there has been 99.9 % success in detection of crime against women. He said that in some cases of rape, the police have slapped MCOCA against the offenders which has ensured that the accused undergoes long sentences in prison.

DCP Deepali Masirkar claimed that they are undertaking a new project titled “Mission Rakshak”. Under this mission, the local police stations will be reaching out to the schools and colleges in their jurisdiction and will be undertaking a session which creates an awareness about the laws for women, how they can come to the police station to register any case and there will be a live demonstration of self-defence techniques. However, she added that it is the parents and the school authorities who have to take it further.

Kalamna murder
The Commissioner of Police S P Yadav then handed over the mike to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-III) Abhinash Kumar to relate the success of the detection of the murder and attempt to destroy identity by burning the body in Kalamna area. He said that in the morning the police recovered a partially burnt dead-body of an unidentified man and in the same night another incident of murder occurred in Kalamna area.

However, before DCP (Zone-III) Abhinash Kumar went ahead to explain about the case, he attempted to defend the police personnel and said that how can anyone prevent a murder? How are the policemen expected by citizens and the media to have omnipresence everywhere in the city? He elaborated and said that with the existing staff, we are doing a pretty good job in prevention and detection of crime.

While explaining about the partially burnt dead-body, he said that DB squad of all the police stations in Kalamna area worked hard and found out that the deceased was a friend of the murderers and had enjoyed liquor with them too. However, he was murdered over a small Bidi. During investigation, the cops discovered that the deceased is identified as Ramchandra Rajaram Bagde aged 54 years and the accused are the neighbours of the deceased identified as Nagesh alias Nagya Pritamlal Borkar aged 26 years and Praveen alias Parya Tatoba Patil aged 24 years. According to DCP Abhinash Kumar, on the day of the incidence the deceased and the two accused enjoyed liquor near Bhandewadi Railway Line and during the binge one of the accused had demanded a Bidi from the deceased. When the deceased refused to part with a Bidi, a brawl erupted and the accused murdered him with sharp edged weapons and in order to destroy his identity, the accused wrapped the dead body in a blanket and poured petrol over it and set it ablaze.

Pulses pilferation
While answering to a question on the detection and arrest of smugglers who were pilfering Pulses (Tuar Dal), DCP Abhinash Kumar said that the accused used to pilfer one kilogram per gunny bag, and one or two gunny bags from a truck load. They used to fill stones in the bottom of the bed of the truck in order to maintain the weight of the truck-load when weighed in the weighbridge. However, when the victim trader started weighing individual bags, he found one or two kilograms short of the required weight and he then went on to find stones in the bottom of the bed of the truck. DCP Abhinash Kumar added that some trucks were modified too. However, the DCP said that they are investigating if there is a syndicate involved in crime or not and till date they have succeeded in arresting one of the drivers who was involved in the crime of pilferage.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Shailesh Balkawde said that during investigation into the attempt to murder a trader in Telipura area, revealed that the entire incident was a result of a Pen-drive which was purchased by the accused and it not working and the shopkeeper refusing to replace it. On going through the CCTV footage they were able to only see the accused but could not identify them. It was then that the adroitness of the DB Squad came into effect and they pointed out that the Modus Operandi of the accused looked very similar to one accused who was externed (Tadipar) from Nagpur. It was then revealed that the externed accused had come to the city along with his son to procure the pen-drive. However, when the pen-drive did not work and the son had gone to demand a replacement, the shopkeeper had allegedly refused to replace the pen-drive since he had tore off the sealed wrapper. Irked by his refusal to replace, the son went and came back with some of his friends who are known goons from Ajni area. This revelation led them to arrest all the accused involved in the attack on the shopkeeper in Telipura area. DCP Shailesh Balkawde added that they have seized swords, iron-rods and other weapons allegedly used by the accused.

Doctors alleging inaction
While answering to a query on the doctors being beaten-up and the police inaction, Commissioner of Police S P Yadav said that police alone cannot perform magic. He claimed that such a big hospital with such a big infrastructure and yet the hospital authorities failed to get even the full name, address or even the mobile number of the patient. With just a name and Mominpura written on a receipt leaves no clue of the identity of a person. Mominpura being a big area, it is like finding a needle in a hay stack. However, he assured to track the attackers soon.

Mysterious death investigation with no lead yet!
While speaking about the mysterious murder of widow of late former Director of NEERI, Vasundhara Bal, DCP Shailesh Balkawde said that they have analyzed and investigated into all possible angles in the case. He added that they have investigated and interviewed all the neighbours, interviewed nearly 70-80 relatives of the Bal family. They have also used all the scientific and technical knowhow in the case to ascertain the murderers. The use of police artist’s sketch and the apprehension of the person in the drawing matched perfectly but alas of no use since he was not at all involved in the case and proved to be a dead end once again. However, DCP Shailesh Balkawde assured the media personnel that they are venturing and exploring all the avenues to crack the case.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police SP Yadav had reviewed the crime situation in the city in a meeting of all the In-Charge Police Inspectors of Police Stations. The senior police officials who addressed the media personnel included Commissioner of Police S P Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police Rajwardhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-III) Abhinash Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shrikant Tarwade, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell) Deepali Masirkar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Bharat Tangde, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Shailesh Balkawde) and others.
