Failing to nab Munna Yadav, cops hands over case to crime branch

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

munnayadavNagpur: After sleeping over BJP leader Omprakash Munna Yadav’s case for more than three months, the cops could not trace the absconding criminal. Now they have shifted the investigations to the crime branch. The development was conveyed to Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court by joint commissioner of police (CP) Shivaji Bodkhe through a letter.
A division bench comprising justices Ravi Deshpande and Murlidhar Giratkar then adjourned the hearing by a week.

The court was hearing a plea by Navita Yadav, through counsel Rajnish Vyas, praying for a CBI enquiry. She had charged the police with shielding Yadav, a former BJP corporator from Ajni, due to his strong connections with the top BJP leadership.

Despite facing many criminal charges, including 12 complaints against him at various police stations, Yadav was appointed chairman of Maharashtra State Construction Workers’ Welfare Board, a post equivalent to minister of state, by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Yadav and his family, including his wife Lakshmi, and sons — Karan and Arjun — were recently booked for attacking and seriously injuring Mangal Yadav, his sister Manju, brothers Papa and Gabbar Yadav, and others, on October 21 over a dispute on bursting firecrackers. The victims were attacked with sword, iron rods, sticks and bricks, which left them seriously injured. The police had booked the Yadavs under various sections including for attempt to murder.

Lakshmi, BJP corporator from Ajni, has already secured bail from HC while her sons were released on bail last month after they surrendered. Yadav and his younger brother Bala are still on the run.

As cops failed to nab Yadav and his sons for over two months, the city police machinery faced the wrath from opposition Congress-NCP members during the assembly session in December. Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and NCP leaders Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil had launched a blistering attack on the CM for protecting the absconding goon with offences against him. They wanted him to be declared an absconder and dismissed from the post of chairman of workers welfare board.

While speaking on the debate on deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra, Vikhe-Patil slammed the police while disclosing that Yadav was hiding in a farmhouse about 22km from the city, and named BJP corporator Vicky Kukreja for helping him. He called on the police to arrest Kukreja and force him to spill the beans on Yadav’s whereabouts.

Nagpur: Amid the growing menace of hookah parlours in Nagpur – the murky trend fast catching up among the college goers and teenagers, the higher ups in the police department has now decided to eventually nail the restaurants rather harder this time! Not only for Nagpur, the recent police order has meant action for all the civic bodies under whose jurisdiction such a menace is flourishing. To effectively crack down on such outlets, Maharashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP) Satish Mathur has directed all police units to recommend respective municipal corporations for cancellation of permissions to the hookah joints operating in their jurisdiction.

It may be mentioned here that many hookah parlours in Nagpur are serving hookah under the garb of providing an upscale sitouts for the youngsters. Sources revealed that these properties include Carnations Rooftop Restaurant, Sadar; Sijazz Cafe Town Land Futala, Ambazari; Vipul house restaurant, Bharat Nagar, Ambazari; Lake Side Grill, Futala, Ambazari; GBS Restaurant, Futala, Ambazari; Kerbstone Lounge, Ravi Nagar Square, Ambazari; Koba Lounge, Ravi Nagar Square, Ambazari; Waffle House, Ravi Nagar; Flames Cafe Lounge, Ambazari; Spot 9 Restaurant, Ambazari; PaiPick Dreams Cafe, Utkarsh Apartment, Sadar; WTF Restaurant, MIDC; Ten11 Restaurant, Rana Pratap Nagar; Skyfall Lounge & Cigaars, Rana Pratap Nagar; Winds & Woods, Sadar; Checkmate Cafe Lounge, North Ambazari Road; Roof 9, Dharampeth; Fusion Cafe & Lounge, Dharampeth.

All these hookah joints and restaurants were raided by the police in year 2017 and 2018. The cops will now write a letter to NMC and press for cancellation of restaurant permissions to these establishments.

The top cop has accorded top priority to the issue and directed all units to compile data of action under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) in every monthly crime meeting.

In his circular to police unit the DGP has asked the force to step in to crush the menace of hookah joints who were found violating rules of COTPA. “Write a letter to concerned officials of Municipal Corporation to cancel the license of the hookah joints immediately after the joint is raided also listing the violations,” the DGP has stated in the circular.

The joints have always remained under scanner of narcotics units and were also proving to be a social problem. Despite police action many of the hookah joints were refusing to mend their ways.

“More than 60 hookah joints are operating in the city. Police have registered cases under COTPA against around 30 hookah joints so far,” a police officer informed.

And yet, many of the joints were operating in the city without any fear of law. This was because the municipal corporation had not initiated any action against them.

After ascertaining the facts and the go-slow approach of the authorities, DGP Satish Mathur has now asked his force to pull up the socks and take stern action against the hookah joints.
