Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Two leopards, including a cub, were found dead in the forest of Khapri village near Nagpur on Thursday morning. Preliminary reports indicate the felines could have died due to poisoning. However, Forest Department personnel were busy in finding the exact cause of death of mother-cub leopard duo.

According to reports, carcasses of the two leopards were spotted at the shores of a nullah near Khapri village. It is being speculated that the big cats could have died due to drinking of contaminated water. But the carcass of female leopard was found near nullah and the cub a distance far away from mother. Had it been the case of poisoning, how could the cub go some meters aaw from her mother. When the adult leopard could not move away from nullah how the cub walked away so much distance after poisoning, is the question pestering the forestmen.

The Forest Department has launched full scale investigations to ascertain cause of death of two leopards. A team of veterinarians would conduct a post-mortem examination later in the day.

Nagpur: Two alert Police Sub Inspectors (PSIs) attached to Ambazari Police Station on Saturday saved a woman who had ‘accidentally’ fallen into Futala Lake and was on the verge of drowning.

It all happened when the unidentified woman earlier had left her home angrily after quarrelling with husband over some domestic issue. After the brawl with husband, the woman straightaway reached Futala Lake on her Access moped (MH-31/DX 1813). She sat on the embankment of the lake and was crying. Suddenly she lost balance and fell directly into the deep waters of the lake. Providentially, the two PSIs Meshram and Ambure were nearby the spot. They informed Fire Brigade about the incident but as it was taking time for Fire Brigade personnel to reach the spot, the two PSIs themselves decided to save the gasping woman. They jumped into the lake and with the help of waist belt and bamboo brought the woman to the shores. The woman is now in the hospital getting medical treatment. Her brawl with husband resulted in chronic depression.

If it wasn’t for the quick response by the two PSIs, she might not have lived to see another day.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: In a major breakthrough, Crime Branch Unit 3 of city police nabbed three accused who had kidnapped a teenage boy by posing as ‘brothers’ of his WhatsApp ‘girlfriend’. Two of the accused were arrested from Mumbai. The kidnapping drama was enacted on February 27 and ransom of Rs 1.20 lakh was demanded from the boy’s father.

The arrested accused have been identified as Suraj Raju Krushnapurkar (26), Mateen Farooq Sheikh (21), both presently staying in Mumbai and Raj Vinod Khanke (19), resident of Godhni Road, near Petrol Pump.

According to details, the complainant Ashok Ganpatrao Deulkar (53), resident of Tukaram Nagar, Kalamna Railway Quarters, Old Kamptee Road, had told police that his son Mayur (17) is student of Class XII. As the Board exam was going on, Mayur had gone to his friend’s house near Kidwai Ground, Pachpaoli, for study. One of the accused Suraj Krushnapurkar had created a bogus Facebook and WhatsApp profile in the name of a girl named “Kajal Bavne”. Using the fake profile, the fictitious “Kajal” befriending Mayur and used to chat with him since the past week and finally decided to meet him face to face. The “girl” chatted with Mayur and invited him to meet her at Walkers Street in Civil Lines. Subsequently, Mayur went to meet her at the spot. But instead of the girl named “Kajal Bavne” the three accused, posing as “brothers” of the girl, appeared at the spot and snatched mobile phone of Mayur. The ‘brothers’ asked Mayur why he is troubling Kajal frequently by calling her on phone. Using Mayur’s mobile phone, the accused called his father Ashok Deulkar and told him that his son is in their custody and a ransom of Rs 1.20 lakh has to be paid for Mayur’s release. Taken aback by the ransom call, Ashok immediately lodged a complaint with Pachpaoli police.

The Crime Branch Unit 3 was handed over the probe. The Crime Branch sleuths, under the guidance of ACP (Crime) Dr Ashwini Patil, took Ashok into confidence and planned to give the ransom money as demanded by the accused. However, when the accused trio sensed that the cops were on their trail, they released Mayur along with his Pleasure moped around 7 pm on the same day. But the accused kept Mayur’s mobile phone with themselves and called his father from time to time and continued to demand the ransom amount.

The third accused Raj Vinod Khanke was rounded up from his Godhni residence in Nagpur. After gruelling interrogation, the three accused confessed involvement in kidnapping and demanding ransom.

One of the accused Suraj Raju Krushnapurkar was working as waiter in Aditi Bar and Restaurant in Badlapur of Thane district since the past two months. As he was burdened with a debt of Rs 40,000, he planned the kidnanning drama. The accused created a Facebook and WhatsApp profile in the name of “Kajal Bavne and chatted continuously with Mayur. As planned Suraj came to Nagpur and stayed at a lodge. Stigma haunts: Police Deptt tops table as most corrupt in 2017, too

Nagpur: The most corrupt stigma continues to disgrace Police Department as it topped the table as most corrupt department in Nagpur district in the year 2017. Revenue Department was not shy of following the police as it also continued with the ‘distinction’ of second most corrupt department. Ironically, these two departments had the dubious record in 2016 as well. Other entities finding place in the list of most corrupt include Agriculture, Education, Gram Panchayat, Forest, Public Works Department, Zilla Parishad, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Labour, Panchayat Samiti and others.

The facts and figures were revealed by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in response to an RTI poser filed by activist Abhay Kolarkar.

The ACB informed that 22 cases of corruption were registered against the Police Department which are highest amongst all departments. Only the cases registered from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017 were taken into account. Revenue Department came second with 14 cases registered against its babus. Interestingly, last year also, Kolarkar had sought such information and these two departments had stood first and second respectively in the corrupt list.

The RTI reply further revealed that the total amount seized in 110 traps laid by ACB stood at Rs 20.81 lakh. The ACB seized around Rs 3.53 lakh in 22 cases in which policemen were caught red-handed in bribe deals. In the 14 cases of Revenue Department, the amount seized is Rs 3.37 lakh. Curiously, the bribe money seized in 10 cases registered against Forest officials is much more than that found in the cases of police and revenue departments. The amount found with the forest officials when they were caught red-handed is Rs 3,85,800. Zilla Parishad too stood third with 10 cases amounting to Rs 1,04,300.

The ACB replied that about 110 traps were planned and 142 people were caught during the trap action. A total number of 104 cases of corruption are still pending and waiting for the action. However, the ACB expressed its inability to provide information regarding the number of cases pending since the past 10 years. The department replied that to gather such information it required to be analysed and go through certain stages. Citing the reason of procedural constraint ACB said that such information could not be provided. The department took cover on the same pretext when Kolarkar sought to know that how many people were arrested for corruption and how many were punished during January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017.

The RTI reply further informed that the departments like RTO, Cooperation, Finance, Irrigation, MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation), NIT (Nagpur Improvement Trust), Excise,Water Resource, Registration and Stamps have recorded zero number of cases.
