Nagpur registers 80 offences under POCSO Act till Oct this year

Nagpur: Recently Ajni police arrested a teacher employed at New Apostolic English School located at Kukde layout here, on the charges of sexually exploiting a 9 year-old girl studying in class IV in the same school. Earlier this month, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly exploited by her tuition teacher. The accused would make the class X student stay back on the pretext of extra class and would commit heinous crime. Frightening it may sound, the stories of child abuse are so closely knitted that gets difficult at times to gauge where the threat lies. Family members, close friends, neighbors, school and tuition teachers have emerged as abusers in an overwhelming majority of cases.

The data from city Crime Branch reveals that between January and October 2019, total 80 cases have been registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act- 2012. While year 2018 witnessed total 99 cases under POSCO Act.

Addressing the critical issue, Deputy Commissioner of Crime (DCP) Detection, Gajanan Rajmane has elaborated on the key role of parents to intervene into the matter and suggested that only kids’ faith and trust on their parents would easily bring such incidents to the fore.

Communication is the key:

“Digitalization and modernization has widened the gap between parents and children. Children should have faith that their parents will listen to their agony. Only then a child would tell his/her feelings to parents. Leaving our cultural taboo behind, parents should talk to their children about good touch and bad touch and refresh it every couple of months. They also need to break the glass ceiling and discuss about sex in a healthy way,” said the DCP.

Accused will get punishment, but child loses innocence:
“Though, the accused will face imprisonment after conviction, but the child losses his innocence. The pain and agony which follows the crime, hunts them for their entire life. Some narrates their ordeal to their parents, however, most kids never do. The kid who faces abuse does not have many avenues to discuss it,” said the DCP.

Importance of faith and trust on parents:
“The known accused often uses process of ‘grooming’ where he spends days preparing the child. The accused first use threats, bribes to gain trust of the child. By doing so, the accused ultimately decrease the chance of child narrating their agony and future misery to anyone. Hence, the parents should bridge the gap of their friends and communicate with them on regular basis. Faith and trust on the parents are the most significant factor eliminating such incidents,” mentioned Rajmane.

Hiding crime makes you culprit:
DCP further asserted, “Hiding child abuse is also a crime under POCSO Act. Suppose if any teacher sexually exploits a student and the head-master found intestinally hiding the matter to protect the pride of the institution, he by law is committing crime and becomes a culprit.”

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Nagpur Police on Thursday delivered a summons, issued by a local court to former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, in connection with a case where he is accused of concealing information about two criminal matters against him in election affidavit.

The summons was delivered at Fadnavis’s house here, said an official of Sadar Police Station. The development came on the day a new Shiv Sena-led government was sworn in in Maharashtra. Fadnavis is MLA from Nagpur.

A magistrate’s court, on November 1, had restored an application seeking criminal proceedings against the BJP leader for alleged non-disclosure.

City-based lawyer Satish Uke had filed an application in the court seeking that criminal proceedings be initiated against Fadnavis.

The Bombay High Court had upheld the lower court’s earlier order dismissing Uke’s plea. But the Supreme Court, on October 1, directed the magistrate’s court to go ahead with the application filed by Uke.

The magistrate’s court on November 4 said the case would be held as a summary criminal case, and issued notice. “Process (notice) is issued against accused (Fadnavis) for offence punishable under section 125A of Representation of People Act, 1951,” magistrate S D Mehta said.

Cases of cheating and forgery were filed against Fadnavis in 1996 and 1998, but charges were not framed in both the matters. Uke alleged that Fadnavis did not disclose this information in his election affidavits.

Nagpur’s Akku Yadav case turns rage after Hyd rape-murder

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The brutal rape and murder of Dr Priyanka Reddy on the outskirts of Hyderabad has once again unleashed a trail of gloom, replete with anger and frustration in the nation’s nerve. The fairer sex community across India is again soaked in its worst fear of getting preyed at the hands of such insane monsters wandering in the dark fringes of city scapes in the human masks. Voice of angst and fury are turning loud and clear and the rage is evident.

Back in Nagpur, the social media is raging up with the recall of Akku Yadav’s lynching in Nagpur court on August 13, 2004. Many users are referring to the similar mode of action with the accused in latest case.

Akku Yadav was a 32-year-old rapist, extortionist, and accused murderer. Following a decade of criminal activity and rape allegations, a bail hearing was scheduled for Yadav on August 13, 2004 in Nagpur District Court, and word spread through the adjoining neighborhood that he would be released. Hundreds of women marched from the slums to the courthouse carrying vegetable knives and chili powder. When Akku Yadav appeared, he saw a woman whom he had raped and shouted that he would rape her again. The woman started hitting him with her sandal.

Yadav was then lynched by a mob of around 200 women from Kasturba Nagar, a slum of Nagpur.Yadav was stabbed over seventy times, and chili powder and stones were thrown in his face. One of his alleged victims also hacked off his penis. This lynching occurred in the Nagpur District Court No. 7 on the marble floor of the courtroom.

Cut to 2019 incident in which Dr Reddy has been victimized. The cries deeply inherit the same old question – how long will such tormentors exist to make life of innocent women worse than hell, or make them lifeless!

The deceased 26-year-old veterinary surgeon from Cyberabad, Telangana has become the latest face of vulnerability at the hands of nocturnal animals that survive beneath the so called civilized cover of the society.

The main accused Mohd Ali alias and his accomplices dragged the victim into the bushes and took turns in raping her. They later smothered her to death and dumped the body below a culvert in Chattanpalli.

The case has been referred to fast track court for speedy proceedings but before the Justice comes, and the proximity of the punishment is decided, the simmering fury among the enraged mob points to the pattern followed in Akku Yadav case.

Nagpur Today View

While we at Nagpur Today doesn’t support such acts of taking law in hands, we equally push for stringent laws and severe punishments for the accused which should set a precedent before such evils and they should think 100 times before committing such heinous acts. However this has been said and repeated countless number of times and it’s high time, the judiciary must react before the people could ‘act’!
