Income Tax raids

Nagpur: In a significant operation, Income Tax (IT) officials raided seven premises linked to two finance brokers in Nagpur on Tuesday. The raids were carried out at their residences and offices in Civil Lines and Wardhaman Nagar, involving a team of around 35 IT staff members, including senior officers, a report in a local daily said.

The report further said that the raids, which began at 9 a.m., were an unusual departure from the department’s customary early-morning timings of 6-7 a.m. Senior officials from Mumbai and Pune also joined the operation, indicating its high priority.

During the search, IT officers reportedly recovered substantial amounts of cash, jewellery, and other valuables. Bank lockers associated with the two brokers were also opened and inspected as part of the investigation, the report added.

According to the report, the raids are linked to a recent seizure of unaccounted cash in Mumbai. The two brokers, identified as Bunty Agrawal and Sanjay Kanoria, are suspected of having connections to the seized cash.

The raids are expected to continue into Wednesday, November 20, as officers delve deeper into the brokers’ financial dealings. The report suggests that the operation aims to uncover undisclosed assets and irregularities in financial transactions linked to the Mumbai cash seizure case.

This high-profile operation highlights the Income Tax Department’s intensified efforts to crack down on tax evasion and financial malpractice across the region. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.

Nagpur: In a shocking case of international fraud, an exporter from Nagpur was allegedly defrauded of Rs 10.74 crore under the pretext of supplying rice to Dubai. The Sadar police in the city have registered a case of cheating against two directors of a Dubai-based company.

The complainant, Jinsi Manoj Chacko (47), a resident of Mohannagar, owns Spended Logistics Solutions Private Limited, which specializes in exporting rice. According to his complaint, Jinsi was approached on April 24 by Arjun Bhim Bahadur Chhetri and Vijay Kartar Singh, who claimed to represent Smart Solutions General Trading LCC Company in Dubai. They informed Jinsi about a significant demand for rice in Dubai and placed an order for 270 metric tonnes of rice.

Jinsi began fulfilling the order between June 14 and August 28, exporting rice worth Rs 17.15 crore to Dubai. While the duo initially paid Rs 6.42 crore, they allegedly refused to settle the outstanding amount of Rs 10.74 crore.

Adding to the deceit, on September 29, Arjun and Vijay reportedly handed over a document to Jinsi, claiming the balance payment had been deposited. However, the document turned out to be forged. Realizing he had been duped, Jinsi approached the Sadar police to file a complaint.

The police have initiated an investigation into the case, and efforts are underway to gather evidence and trace the accused. This incident has raised concerns among exporters about the risks of dealing with international clients without stringent verification processes.

HC grants bail to Nagpur’s SFS School teacher accused of molesting students

Nagpur The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court has granted bail to S.F.S. School teacher named Sankalp Medha, the accused in the infamous case of POCSO wherein 11 ex-students and 2 current students were coerced, intimidated and mentally harassed as well as some female students were molested by him. An Offence was registered against this school teacher under Sections 296, 74, 115(2), 351(2), 75(2) of BNS read with Section 12 of POCSO Act at Sadar police station

Justice Urmila Joshi Phalke granted the bail to the accused.

It is alleged that this accused school teacher was in the habit of using filthy language in respect of students as well as he used to physically touch the neck, face of some female students and used to beat them with a duster or bottle if they resisted his actions.

Adv. Kamal Satuja and Adv. Kailash Dodani appearing for the accused- school teacher Sankalp Medha had pointed out to the court that the accused is falsely implicated in the present case due to personal grievance of one student who has insisted other students also to give complaint against him and there is a delay of more than 12 months in lodging FIR which is apparent from chargesheet. Further there is too much inconsistency in the statements of witnesses which itself makes the case of prosecution doubtful.

Adv. Satuja and Adv. Dodani further pointed out to the court that this school teacher is employed with S.F.S. School for more than 10 years but this is the first ever complaint or offence registered against him. The maximum punishment provided for the offences is 5 years and now the investigation is already completed and chargesheet is also filed, therefore his further incarceration is not required as the same will amount to pre-trial punishment which is always depreciated by the High Court and Supreme Court. Therefore they prayed for releasing this accused- school teacher on bail.

AGP Shamsi Haider and Adv. Aniruddha Anantkrishnan appointed for victims strongly opposed the bail application of this accused on the ground that allegations against this school teacher are in respect of sexual harassment. Many students came forward narrating acts committed by the applicant which sufficiently shows involvement of the accused in this crime. There are chances that if he is released on bail he will again commit such type of crimes and will threaten the prosecution witnesses. Therefore they prayed for rejection of his bail.

After hearing arguments of both sides and appreciating arguments of defence, Justice Urmila Joshi Phalke granted bail to the accused school teacher Sankalp Medha by directing him not to enter said school premises, not to tamper with prosecution witnesses and to attend trial regularly before the court below without seeking any exemption unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Adv. Kamal Satuja, Adv. Kailash Dodani and Adv. Anmol Goswamy appeared for the accused-school teacher Sankalp Medha. AGP Shamsi Haider represented the prosecution.

Nagpur: Sensation gripped the Ganeshpeth area near the bus stand in Nagpur on Thursday after the decomposed body of a 43-year-old man from Jalgaon was discovered hanging in the bathroom of a lodge in Dhamma Nagar. The deceased, identified as Kunal Narkhede, had reportedly consumed pesticide and liquor before taking his life. Police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the drastic step.

Narkhede had checked into the lodge on December 3, after arriving in Nagpur with his elder brother to visit Tajbagh on November 29. While his brother returned to Jalgaon on December 2, Narkhede chose to stay back and shifted to the lodge alone. When lodge management did not see him for a day, they informed the Ganeshpeth Police. Upon forcibly entering the room, police discovered his body along with five pouches of pesticide, three of which were empty, and two liquor bottles, one of which was almost finished.

Narkhede had used straps from his rucksacks, which he joined to create a makeshift rope, to hang himself from the bathroom window. His decomposed body was sent to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem. Police are waiting for his family to arrive from Jalgaon to provide more information about the circumstances that may have led to the suicide. “No suicide note was found, and his cell phone is locked. The reasons could be personal,” said Senior Inspector Machhindra Pandit of Ganeshpeth Police Station. A case of accidental death has been registered.

Meanwhile, the discovery of the body has reignited concerns among local residents about the activities taking place in and around Dhamma Nagar and Ganeshpeth. Residents have alleged that several lodges in the area are hubs for anti-social activities, claiming they attract dubious elements, including goons and young girls in school uniforms. Some residents said these lodges have been the site of several police investigations, including cases related to sexual assaults.

“These lodges have become a major nuisance, but people fear filing complaints as the owners are well-connected with local authorities,” a resident shared on condition of anonymity. Residents urged the police to take stricter action to regulate such establishments and restore law and order in the area.

The incident underscores the need for a comprehensive review of local lodge operations and a proactive approach to addressing safety and ethical concerns in the Ganeshpeth locality.

Nagpur: A tense altercation between a police officer and a civilian erupted at an accident site in Teachers Colony on Bahadura Road, Nagpur, on Friday. Baba Bokade, husband of a former Gram Panchayat member, has been booked by the Wathoda police for assaulting a police officer and obstructing government work.

The incident occurred as Wathoda police, led by night officer Sub-Inspector (PSI) Krushna Solanke, were investigating the accidental death of Ashwin Gedam, a 30-year-old resident of Ramakrishna Nagar, Dighori. Gedam tragically drowned after falling into a water-filled trench along with his two-wheeler the previous night.

Gedam had been returning home from his maternal uncle’s house around midnight when the incident occurred. The trench, located near Teacher’s Colony on Bahadura Road, was filled with water. Gedam, who had metal rods in both legs, was unable to escape the pit and drowned. On Friday morning, local residents discovered his body and alerted the police.

The Wathoda police team arrived at the scene around 8:30 am to retrieve the body and begin their investigation. However, their efforts were hampered by a gathering crowd, which included Bokade and his supporters.

PSI Solanke requested Bokade and others to vacate the area to facilitate the investigation. When Bokade refused and began arguing, Solanke reportedly explained the urgency of the situation and insisted on crowd control to allow the police to perform their duties. Bokade, however, became enraged and allegedly attacked Solanke when he was asked to leave the spot.

Following the altercation, Bokade was subdued by police personnel and taken to the Wathoda police station. A case was registered against him under relevant sections for assaulting a police officer, obstructing government work, and issuing threats.

Viral video of the Incident

A video capturing the altercation between Bokade and the police personnel went viral on social media by Friday evening, sparking widespread discussions about public interference during official investigations.

PSI Solanke stated, “We were in the process of retrieving the body and conducting our investigation when the crowd became an obstacle. Despite repeated requests, Bokade not only refused to cooperate but also attacked a member of the police force. Such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

This incident has highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement during emergency situations, emphasizing the need for public cooperation to ensure efficient operations and avoid such confrontations.

Nagpur: A man impersonating a police officer has been arrested by the Ganeshpeth police for blackmailing and extorting money from a senior citizen in Nagpur.

The victim, Uday Keshavrao Thakre (69), a resident of Manish Nagar and a retired employee of Koradi Power Station, was targeted on October 23, 2024. At around 11:30 a.m., Uday was returning home after buying vegetables from Cotton Market and taking the Metro. Near the escalator at the Metro station, he encountered the accused, Sudhir Babarrao Lokhande (53), a resident of Renuka Saraswati Apartment, Bajaj Nagar.

Sudhir approached Uday, claiming, “The police have surrounded you. I’m also a police officer, and your photo is on my phone.” When Uday asked why the police were after him and how his photo ended up on Sudhir’s phone, the accused gave no response.

Sudhir then began searching Uday’s pockets, which caused Uday’s blood pressure to spike. Taking advantage of Uday’s distress, Sudhir demanded money to “save him from arrest.” Since Uday didn’t have cash with him, Sudhir took him home on his bike, staying outside while Uday went inside.

At home, Uday gave Sudhir Rs 10,000 in cash and withdrew another Rs 40,000 from an ATM, handing over a total of Rs 50,000. However, Sudhir continued to threaten Uday, demanding an additional Rs 1 lakh. Terrified, Uday shared the ordeal with his wife and son.

On November 15, Uday went to his ancestral village in Deoli, Wardha district, to work on his farm. The next day, the accused Sudhir arrived at Uday’s house and introduced himself to Uday’s wife, claiming he knew Uday under the surname “Kanhere.” After obtaining Uday’s phone number from his wife, Sudhir began threatening him again.

Sudhir demanded Rs 2.5 lakh from Uday, citing Uday’s farmland and house as reasons he could afford to pay. He also pretended to speak to a senior officer and threatened to send a police vehicle to arrest Uday if the amount wasn’t paid.

Acting on Uday’s complaint, the police set a trap and apprehended Sudhir. He was presented before a court on Friday, where he was granted bail.

It has been revealed that Sudhir had detailed knowledge of police procedures and spoke in a manner similar to real police officers. This has led authorities to suspect that he may have previously been associated with the police, possibly as an informer. There are also concerns that he may have defrauded other victims in similar ways.

Nagpur: In a disgraceful incident that put Nagpur to shame, a four-year-old girl told her mother about her father’s sexually abusive acts with her, blowing the lid off her repeated exploitation over the last few days by the 34-year-old man, according to a report in a local daily.

The daily report further said that the father had left home with the daughter following a tiff with his wife on December 4. The man is learnt to have made undue advances towards the girl at different places where he took refuge in the night over the last few days when he was alone with the daughter.

After returning home, the survivor confided to her mother about her father’s abnormal behaviour when they were away. The stunned woman rushed her minor daughter to the neighbours as she was not able to believe her ears and comprehend what to do next. A social worker, who came to know about the daughter’s plight, alerted the police control room.

The call was diverted to the Child Protection Department and Child Helpline Desk, which swung into action along with the Mankapur Police Station under the supervision of DCP Lohit Matani. “We promptly acted to take the father into custody and also ensured the safety of the survivor. The medical examinations were promptly done too,” said Matani.

According to the report quoting a source from Mankapur Police Station, the four-and-half-year-old child, who may not understand the seriousness of the acts, openly spoke about her exploitation in front of the police and officials from the women and child development department.

An offence was registered against the father in the presence of District Child Protection Officer Mushtak Pathan and Childline Helpline representative Meenakshi Dhadade.

It’s learnt the woman had married the man, now behind bars, in Goa in 2018. They had shifted to Nagpur and later started staying with the man’s parents at their house within the jurisdiction of Mankapur Police Station. “The survivor also recalled various instances of her abuse by the father before the Childline Helpline representatives,” said the report.

As per the survivor’s mother, her husband was jobless and depended upon her earnings. He would often thrash her for money to consume liquor.

The Child Protection Department and police officials will present the survivor before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for the further course of action. In view of the tender age of the minor, she was allowed to remain with her mother by the child protection officer and police after the police complaint and medical examination formalities. The officials will now highlight the vulnerability of the child before the CWC on Monday.

Dance bar operating under nose of MIDC Police Station busted in Nagpur

Nagpur: In a dramatic late-night operation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Lohit Matani and his team raided a dance bar located barely half a kilometre from the MIDC Police Station in Nagpur. The raid, conducted at around 1:45 am on Sunday, uncovered women performing obscene dances while customers showered currency notes on them.

Acting on the directives of Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal and Joint Commissioner of Police Nisar Tamboli, DCP Matani has been spearheading a series of raids within his jurisdiction. This particular operation targeted a dance bar, along with a Dharampeth hookah parlour and two dhabas in Bajaj Nagar and Hingna where liquor was being consumed without proper permissions.

The dance bar, permitted only for orchestra music, was found hosting performances that violated Section 8(4) of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Obscene Dance Act and the Protection of Dignity of Women Act, 2016. Additionally, charges under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for insulting the modesty of women were filed against the establishment.

Cops seized Rs 37,500 worth of currency notes that had been thrown at the dancers over the course of a couple of hours. Customers were reportedly making obscene gestures, and bar management was found playing music from laptops tailored to their requests. Police in plain clothes initially infiltrated the premises, documenting the activities under the glow of pink-hued disco lights before initiating the raid.

A total of 21 individuals were booked, including four women singers and dancers. Notices were served to these women, including one from Navi Mumbai, to appear before investigating officers. Among the accused were:

• Bar Owner: Jai Baldeo Hirani (42), resident of Pande Layout, Khamla

• Manager: Raju Lalchand Zamba (59), resident of Mahadeo Heights, 502, Nari, Jaripatka

• Cashier: Devendra Ramkrushna Shende (38), resident of Ekatmata Nagar, Shivangaon Road, Jaitala

Reports suggest that a person named Vicky, suspected to have connections with both law enforcement and gangsters, is a key backer of the bar. A notorious city gangster, Maroti, is also said to frequent the establishment. Sources claim the bar operated with stringent entry protocols, allowing access only to select patrons referred by insiders. Special guests allegedly received exclusive entertainment, with the premises locked from the outside to maintain secrecy.

The raid is part of a broader crackdown led by DCP Matani. In an earlier raid, the management of a Dharampeth hookah parlour was booked for destroying evidence after CCTV cameras were shut down during the police inspection. Such operations have raised questions about the involvement of local police personnel in facilitating illegal activities, especially given the proximity of the dance bar to the MIDC Police Station.

The raid has sent shockwaves across Nagpur, triggering widespread discussions about the accountability and integrity of law enforcement in curbing such unlawful establishments. Further investigations are underway to trace the network and ensure stringent actions against those involved.

Nagpurians, beware of new trap: Cyber crooks devise ‘Wedding Invitation Scam’

$

Nagpur: Cyber fraudsters have devised a new trick to target unsuspecting Nagpurians by exploiting their curiosity and emotions. In a ploy dubbed the “Wedding Invitation Scam,” victims receive a wedding invitation link on WhatsApp from an unknown number. When the recipient opens the file, assuming it is a genuine invite, they inadvertently download an APK (Android Package Kit) file. Within moments, they lose control of their phone as cybercriminals gain access to sensitive data and personal information.

Reports indicate hundreds of similar complaints have surfaced across Nagpur and the State.

Modus operandi of the scam

Cybercriminals are constantly innovating to lure victims into their traps. Previously, they used scare tactics like pretending to call from a bank or warning about account deactivation to extract sensitive information such as ATM passwords. However, as people have become more cautious about these methods, scammers have shifted to more emotionally driven strategies.

In the current scam, cybercriminals send a video link titled “Wedding Invitation” with the file name ending in “.APK.” The sender’s number is unfamiliar, yet recipients often assume it is from a relative or acquaintance. Out of curiosity or fear of missing a family event, many download the file.

Once the file is downloaded, the phone shuts down and restarts with altered settings. Through the malicious APK file, fraudsters secretly take control of the phone. They then gain access to:

• Messages

• Contact lists

• Photos and videos

• Banking apps

• Payment apps like Paytm and Google Pay

• Social media accounts like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram

Scammers misuse documents stored on the phone, such as Aadhaar and PAN cards, for fraudulent purposes.

Using the compromised phone, scammers often make online purchases through payment apps linked to the victim’s bank accounts. The payments are deducted directly from the victim’s accounts without their knowledge. The scam also involves transferring money from the victim’s bank account to the fraudsters’ accounts, causing significant financial losses.

Police warning

Amit Dolas, Police Inspector, Nagpur Cyber Crime, has urged citizens to remain vigilant against such scams. “Do not download files in APK format from unknown sources, as they may contain malware or give criminals control over your phone. If you suspect fraud, immediately call the helpline number 1930 or file a complaint at the nearest police station,” he said.

Citizens are advised to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to such schemes.

Nagpur: A deeply disturbing incident has come to light in Nagpur city, where a retired Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl from his locality. The accused, identified as Kavdu Dhurve, allegedly filmed the abusive acts, further aggravating the crime. This shocking case has created turmoil within the Police Department.

The victim’s family has lodged a complaint at the Gittikhadan Police Station, following which a case of rape and related offenses has been registered against the retired police officer.

The 14-year-old victim, an eighth-class student, resides with her parents in the Gittikhadan area. The accused, Kavdu Dhurve, retired from the Motor Transport Department of the Nagpur City Police and lives in the same neighbourhood.

According to the police, Dhurve was a close family friend and frequently visited the victim’s house. Over time, he developed sinister intentions toward the girl. Using chocolates as a pretext, he lured her and engaged in inappropriate acts when her parents were away. He intimidated the girl, warning her not to disclose the abuse to anyone.

Emboldened by the girl’s silence, Dhurve continued his predatory behaviour, repeatedly visiting her home and forcing her into physical relations. On certain occasions, he took her to his house and sexually assaulted her. He filmed these acts on his mobile phone and used the footage to blackmail her, threatening to share the explicit content on social media if she did not comply with his demands.

The victim, however, started distancing herself from the accused in recent days. Enraged by her resistance, Dhurve threatened to leak the videos. Despite his threats, the brave girl stood her ground and resisted further contact.

In retaliation, Dhurve reportedly posted obscene photos and videos of the girl on a WhatsApp group in the locality. Shocked by this act, some residents alerted the victim’s father about the explicit content. Upon learning of the situation, the girl’s family immediately approached the Gittikhadan Police Station and lodged a complaint.

The police have registered a case against the pervert accused Kavdu Dhurve under relevant charges and probing the matter further.

The SSB team rescued the minor girl and took Munnibai into custody.
